Why it matters: Around the world, governments and companies are deploying facial recognition at breakneck speed. A rising chorus of critics say it could be abused for profiling and hypersurveillance. The same day Pew released this study, over 30 organizations endorsed a campaign to ban law enforcement's use of facial recognition, led by nonprofit Fight for the Future.
