It’s taken a decade of acquisitions and investments to get Big Tech to where it is today—prioritizing AI almost as much as all those privacy pivots you’re hearing about.

According to recent CB Insights research, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon (aka FAMGA) have been busy snapping up AI since 2010:

  • FAMGA have made 124 investments in AI startups...
  • And purchased over 50 AI companies.

These deals “played a major role in helping [Big Tech] scale their internal projects, popular products, and core technologies,” CB analyst Deepashri Varadharajan told me. Alexa, Siri, and Google’s healthcare work, for example, are all thanks to smart dealmaking.

Who are FAMGA opening their wallets for?

AI companies working on voice assistants, specialized chips, or techniques to recognize your face, detect objects in an image, and understand language.

Bottom line: If you can’t beat ’em, buy ’em. Each corporate research lab competes to bring the best AI talent and concepts—already in short supply—under one roof. Lucky for FAMGA, they have plenty of cash on hand and organic kale on the lunch menu.
