How would you describe your job to someone who doesn’t work in tech?

As a software engineer at Akasa, I am responsible for building tailored services for health systems to help them automate and optimize back-end operations, i.e., the financial and administrative side of healthcare—ultimately allowing them to reduce healthcare staff burnout and improve the patient experience.

What emerging tech are you most optimistic about? Least? And why?

I am most optimistic about products that offer sustainable practices, such as compostable toilets, water recycling systems, and alternative energy sources.

I am most skeptical of autonomous diagnosis for medical specialties such as internal medicine and radiology. I know how AI can be extremely useful in these scenarios, but I believe that we have a long way to go before we can fully automate these specialties. I’m not just saying this because my husband is about to become a radiologist.

What’s the best piece of tech-related media you’ve read/watched/listened to?

The most exciting tech-related media that I have watched recently would be astronomer Sara Issaoun’s talk at PyCon about how the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration was able to use technology to produce the first-ever picture of a black hole in space. The process they took to get the image was so fascinating and exciting, and I definitely recommend watching it!

One thing we can’t guess from your LinkedIn profile?

My sport of choice these days is long-distance trail running! I have participated in four ultramarathons (three 50k races and one 50-mile race) and hope to eventually try a 100-mile race.
